What to expect from a freelance SEO service, what results are realistic and how to assess whether it is worth it for your business.
More and more businesses are looking for a freelance SEO professional rather than hiring a large agency. The reasons are clear: direct access to the expert, more flexibility and generally lower cost. But there is also more variability in quality — there are very good freelancers and freelancers who take your money and disappear.
This is a practical guide to knowing what to expect, what to ask and when it makes sense.

What a freelance SEO actually does
The work varies by profile, but generally includes: initial technical audit (indexation errors, speed, URL structure, hreflang), keyword research and content mapping, on-page optimisation (titles, meta descriptions, heading structure, structured data), and monthly position and traffic tracking with ongoing adjustments.
More specialised freelancers also do link building — getting other websites to link to yours — which is one of the hardest and most important ranking factors.
What results are realistic
SEO is not advertising — results are not immediate. In a well-executed project, the typical timeline is: first technical improvements visible in Google Search Console within 4-8 weeks, first position gains on long-tail keywords within 2-4 months, and sustained improvements on more competitive keywords within 6-12 months.
A competent freelancer can take a site from 0 Google impressions to 1,000-5,000 monthly impressions on relevant keywords within 6 months, if the niche is not ultra-competitive and both technical and content work is done well.
How much does a freelance SEO cost
Rates vary widely by experience and specialisation. In the Spanish market in 2026: junior consultant, €300-600/month. Mid-level with 3-5 years experience, €600-1,500/month. Senior specialist, €1,500-3,000/month or more.
There are also one-off services: a full technical audit typically costs €400-1,200. A keyword strategy and content map, €300-800. If budget is tight, starting with an audit and clear action plan can be more useful than a poorly defined monthly retainer.
Warning signs
Watch out for anyone who promises "reaching number 1 on Google" in short timeframes or with guarantees of specific results. A good SEO freelancer will tell you what they are going to do, when they estimate results and what metrics they will use to measure success. They will not promise positions.
When it makes sense to hire a freelance SEO
For an SME with a 20-100 page website, moderate budget and mid-competition niche, a good freelance SEO is probably the most efficient option. You have direct access to the expert, cost is lean and if you work well together, results are completely comparable to a large agency.
